Happy Birthday Dad
February 23rd, 2021, the day you turn 49 you old man.
To me you will never be an old man. You’ll be the guy who chased me around in the house in my pj’s when you got home after work, I thought you were the fastest guy on the planet… for your sake I will keep on believing that :) To me you’ll be the guy who values quality time with your family because it doesn’t come often for you, but when it does you do your best to be so present in the moment and create memories.
To me you will forever be the guy who listens to me and tells me your honest opinion on all of the dreams I have, you never limit them though. To me you will forever be the guy who is always down to ride any rollercoaster and waterslide with me, I don’t care how old we are that we continue doing this. To me you will forever be the guy who laughs so hard you sound like a hyena.
You’ll be the guy when I think about what I deserve and want in a guy; someone who values family, hard work and being honest and true to who you are. You’ll be the guy when I think about leaving my loved ones when I take the next step in life; you don’t know it but that dance we had when I left for Africa where we both cried made me feel okay going as I knew I had someone who supported and loved me so much. You’re the guy who will always remind me of the timber, you love it out there.. one day I hope that you get to spend more time doing that.
You will be the guy who made me automatically look at the damn ceiling and walls wherever I go somewhere and think “Man, what a terrible drywall job” or “That seal is cracked in the ceiling.” You’re the guy who I will remember who loves his kids so much, so much that you never winced when Ethan, Becky and I would pick off the drywall stuck to your arm hair when you would come home from work when we were little… I bet that hurt so much but you let us do it.
To me George Strait will never be uncool, because whenever I hear a song of his it will bring me back to us riding around on the farm or the gravels. To me fall will hold a special place in my heart as that’s your favorite season because of the weather and it reminds me of chopping wood. To me, the Mentos candy won’t be considered not healthy, as it literally saved your life from smoking.. I mean there are better alternatives but this is okay with me :)
Dad, you are one of a kind. I wish we saw each other more and that life was different where you were able to do more of what you loved. I know why you work so hard though, I know that you just want the best for us and never want to not provide for your family. We literally wouldn’t be where we are today without you. You push yourself so hard and that doesn’t go unnoticed. I am lucky to see the side that others may not be able to see, the guy who CAN slow down and watch a movie or The Ranch. The guy who loves to grill on his Blackstone and be so proud to be able to make your family dinner when you can come home early.
I love you to the moon and back.
